No More Time Waste

August 30, 2007 – 3:57 am

Lately I’ve been spending way too much time on tech news sites like reddit. Whenever I had some free time and thought about doing something productive like reading a book, I would end up gravitating toward one of these time suckers instead. Hours would pass. From time to time I’d learn something new, but most of it was spent on mind-numbing entertainment like lolcat. (my personal favorite btw).

Well, no more! My /etc/hosts now looks like this:

...
# Banned sites
127.0.0.1 reddit.com
127.0.0.1 digg.com
127.0.0.1 slashdot.org
...

going to one of these sites returns this:

You may not waste time!

DO SOMETHING USEFUL!

I did that a week ago, and so far it works. I did not check any of these sites since, and instead I’m actually doing productive things. Turns out that this is just the right amount of barrier that works for me. Next step: Convince SO to get rid of equally sinful TV.

  4. Been living without a TV for 5 years.
    I’d recommend it to anyone.
Everytime you watch a commercial on TV, your brain shrinks a little. It does so, because the people who create TV commercials are experts on how to shrink your brain using the correct combination of hypnosis, semi-epileptic visual effects, and neuro-linguistic programming. Don’t let them!

  5. Once you figure out how do we convince our wives to get rid of the TV curse, let us all know.
While news sites waste just your time, the cable/sat company also waste your money! (more than 200 shekels each month).
